Concerts on the Square: A 40-Year Madison Tradition of Music and Community

Concerts on the Square has been bringing music to the Capitol Square for over 40 years. Since its founding in 1984, Concerts on the Square has become a favorite Madison tradition for tens of thousands each year.

History of Concerts on the Square

In the winter of 1983, Madison businesswoman Pleasant Rowland saw the opportunity to improve access to the arts and create a sense of community while gathering on the beautiful Wisconsin State Capitol lawn. By the summer of 1984, that idea evolved into the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra's first season of Concerts on the Square. Like today, the series was completely free of charge for the entire community. It has grown into a gem of Madison, and annually over 250,000 patrons come together on the Square for this six-concert series.

A Musical Experience Like No Other

Concerts on the Square offers a diverse range of musical performances, from classical masterpieces to contemporary favorites, often featuring internationally acclaimed artists alongside local talent. The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of its esteemed conductor, creates a magical atmosphere that captivates audiences of all ages.

A Tradition of Togetherness

Beyond the music, Concerts on the Square fosters a sense of togetherness and celebration. Families, friends, and neighbors gather on blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy picnics, socialize, and take in the stunning backdrop of the Capitol building. The event has become synonymous with summer evenings in Madison, providing a space for people to connect and create lasting memories.

Whether you’re a long-time attendee or a first-time visitor, Concerts on the Square offers an unforgettable experience that embodies the spirit of Madison—a city where music, culture, and community come together.
