DK Eyewitness Travel recently listed Madison, Wisconsin as America’s most underrated and overlooked city! It was joined by other US cities like Sacramento, CA and Anchorage, AK. While it may not be a top travel destination for those around the country, Madison’s residents know and appreciate all of the activity, culture and natural beauty that Madison has to offer.

AN ACTIVE CITY

Madison is certainly the place to be year-round with plenty of warm and cool weather activities. The country’s largest farmers market is held each Saturday from April to November on the Capitol Square and features the best produce in the area. In the winter months, the Market moves to the Monona Terrace which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1938 and built in 1997. The Capitol Square also hosts the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra on warm, summer Wednesdays for their much-loved Concerts on the Square events. This year’s newest addition is the Madison Night Market which will take place on Gilman Street and will host local vendors and artisans, live music and great food for one evening in May, June and July. During the winter months, visitors and residents alike can ice skate at Tenney Park or watch the ice boats sail on Lake Monona.

LOCAL CULTURE AND CUISINE

Not only is Madison known for its outdoor activities, but also its many art, music and theatrical venues. Broadway plays and musicians are hosted at the Overture Center and right across the street, a wide variety of musicians and comedians can be found at the historic Orpheum Theater. Live music can be found in venues big and small – from big names at Breese Stevens Field to local musicians in restaurants and bars – and art is abundant with many local galleries and several art museums.

Local food is king in Madison and many restaurants focus on locally grown, farm-to-table ingredients. For those working downtown, food carts offer a wide variety of convenient lunch options and for dinner, the choices are endless. From specialty pizza at Lucille to a 5-course meal at the James Beard Award winning L’Etoile, there is truly something for everyone.
