Fall in Madison: Your Guide to the Season
There’s something special about fall in Madison. As temperatures cool and the leaves begin to change, the city comes alive with seasonal events, outdoor activities, Badger traditions and plenty of reasons to spend a little more time outside.
Whether you’re looking forward to a Saturday around the Capitol Square, an afternoon taking in the fall colors or one of Madison’s many seasonal events, here are a few ways to make the most of fall in Madison.
Take in the Fall Colors
You don’t have to travel far to enjoy beautiful fall scenery. Downtown Madison offers plenty of opportunities to take in the changing leaves, whether you’re walking around the Capitol Square, making your way down State Street or enjoying views of the lakes.
For even more fall color, head to the UW–Madison Arboretum for miles of trails through woodlands and prairies, or take a walk out to Picnic Point for views across Lake Mendota.
Spend a Saturday on the Square
Fall is one of the best times to visit the Dane County Farmers’ Market. Pick up seasonal produce, flowers, baked goods and other local favorites while making your way around the Capitol Square.
Afterward, explore the shops and restaurants downtown, visit the Wisconsin State Capitol or simply grab a coffee and enjoy a crisp fall morning in the heart of Madison.
Experience GLEAM at Olbrich
Fall evenings offer the perfect opportunity to experience Olbrich Botanical Gardens in an entirely different way. GLEAM returns with large-scale light installations throughout the outdoor gardens, creating a colorful nighttime experience that has become a favorite Madison fall tradition.
This year’s exhibit continues through October 24th, giving you plenty of time to add an evening at Olbrich to your fall plans.
Check Out a Fall Festival
Madison’s calendar stays busy throughout September and October. The Willy Street Fair returns September 19–20 with live entertainment, food and local vendors, while the Madison Night Market returns to State Street September 17th and October 15th.
A short drive outside the city brings even more seasonal celebrations, including New Glarus Oktoberfest September 24–27 and Mount Horeb’s Fall Village Market October 3rd – 4th.
Cheer on the Badgers
Fall in Madison wouldn’t be complete without the Badgers. Football Saturdays bring an unmistakable energy to the city, from tailgating and packed restaurants to the traditions of game day at Camp Randall.
And football isn’t the only way to get in on the action. Fall is also a great time to catch Badger volleyball and other UW athletics throughout the season.
Celebrate Books and Authors
The Wisconsin Book Festival celebrates its 25th Annual Fall Celebration October 15–18, bringing authors and readers together for events throughout downtown Madison.
With more than 80 authors and over 55 free events planned, it’s a great option for anyone looking to mix something a little different into their fall calendar.
Enjoy the Season While It Lasts
From farmers’ markets and football Saturdays to colorful trails, festivals and crisp afternoons downtown, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy fall in Madison.
The season never seems to last quite long enough, so get outside, explore the city and enjoy one of the best times of year in Madison.
